PUBG Bringing Back Erangel Classic Map in May 2024

It’s crazy to think that it’s already been seven years since PUBG first came roaring onto the gaming scene and permanently changed the face of the medium, both on its own and by inspiring titles like Fortnite. Of course, as time went on, the game evolved. It’s in a very different place now, both in small and big ways. Well, if you’re nostalgic for the PUBG of old, get ready: it’s time to relive the past.

Erangel Classic Returning to PUBG

Yes indeed, the classic version of Erangel will make its triumphant return in PUBG this May. Specifically, from May 14th to May 28th on PC and from May 23rd to June 6th on consoles. It will replace the current variant of Erangel in Normal Match. But it’s not just the map layout that’s gonna revert to olden times, oh no. The devs will retool several aspects to make the experience as authentic as possible. Here’s the list of changes, as per the official announcement:

  • Foggy and rainy weather on the classic map
  • Bench weapons will be back on the starting island; grab your favorite gun before everyone else does
  • Vintage world map & minimap, the match start timer, font and graphics
  • Reduced recoil to emulate the feel of the gunplay from back in the day
  • Search for the Tommy Gun in the Care Package, just like you used to
  • Knocking down enemies will require more time
  • Clothes and helmets will appear on the ground

There will be more detailed patch notes on May 13th, so keep an eye out for those. I’m pretty certain you get the general vibe they’re going for, though. As the post puts it: “Erangel Classic preserves the essence of the earlier version of Erangel, its distinctive appearance and atmosphere, all while delivering the enjoyable gameplay experiences that players have grown accustomed to.” It’s gonna be a bloody, mayhem-filled trip down memory lane.
